    Janie Steckenrider’s research and teaching are focused in the areas of political gerontology, aging and sexuality, and generations and politics. Her publications include Sexual Activity of Older Adults: Let’s Talk About It (Lancet Healthy Longevity), Women as Political Leaders (with Michael Genovese, Taylor and Francis Press), and New Directions in Old Age Policies (with Tonya Parrott, SUNY Press) and articles in academic journals. Her expertise and research have been featured in media outlets such as The Washington Post, The Economist, People, WebMD, The Hill, U.S. News and World Report, Daily Mail, and USA Today.

    Professor Steckenrider regularly presents her research at national conferences including the Gerontological Society of America, the World Conference on Aging, and the Kinsey Institute and appeared on LAist’s AirTalk with Larry Mantle. Throughout her career, Professor Steckenrider has focused on issues related to the health and well-being of older adults. She conducted the first public opinion poll examining the level of knowledge and concern regarding Alzheimer’s disease and revisited the topic 10 years later to track shifts in public perception. Additionally, she has served on the Boards of Directors of a Skilled Nursing Facility, a large hospital, an Alzheimer’s Foundation, and on a city’s senior commission.
