    Professor Fisher holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Near Eastern Religions from the University of California, Berkeley. He received an M.A. in Biblical Languages from the Graduate Theological Union, and a B.S. in Physics from California State University, Chico. Prior to joining the LMU faculty, Professor Fisher was a post-doctoral researcher in the Anthropology of the Contemporary Research Collaboratory, Anthropology Department, University of California, Berkeley, CA.

    Professor Fisher’s trans-disciplinary study of spirituality and mysticism takes place at the intersection of cultural anthropology and classical biblical studies. This work includes a critical analysis of the ways in which sacred texts and traditions are taken up within modern and contemporary forms of discourse with their respective technologies of power relations (including the interplay and interference with knowledge relations in the present). Professor Fisher teaches courses in Jewish Studies, Theological Studies, Archaeology & Classics, and the Bioethics Institute at LMU. Professor Fisher is co-chair of the History of Christianity program unit for the American Academy of Religion. In addition to his scholarly publications, Professor Fisher’s work has appeared in the Washington Post, he has been interviewed by Voz de América, and he has been a guest on the History Channel’s “The UnXplained” and “Ancient Aliens” programs.
