Roy Fisher

Roy A. Fisher, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor in the History of Spirituality and Mysticism at Loyola Marymount University’s Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts in Los Angeles. Professor Fisher holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Near Eastern Religions from the University of California, Berkeley. He received an M.A. in Biblical Languages from the Graduate Theological Union, and a B.S. in Physics from California State University, Chico. Prior to joining the LMU faculty, Professor Fisher was a post-doctoral researcher in the Anthropology of the Contemporary Research Collaboratory at UC Berkeley.

Professor Fisher’s scholarship explores human relationships with the sacred at the intersection of religious studies and cultural anthropology, examining spirituality and mysticism across diverse historical and cultural contexts. His work critically examines how the sacred is experienced and how sacred texts, traditions, practices, and material cultures are produced, interpreted, negotiated, and transformed within changing social and cultural worlds.

Professor Fisher teaches courses in Jewish Studies, Theological Studies, Archaeology & Classics, and the Bioethics Institute at LMU. Professor Fisher is co-chair of the History of Christianity program unit for the American Academy of Religion. In addition to his scholarly publications, Professor Fisher’s work has appeared in the Washington Post, he has been interviewed by Voz de América, and he has been a guest on the History Channel’s “The UnXplained” and “Ancient Aliens” programs.
