Abstract

The teachings of the Catholic bishop St. Augustine have influenced religion and society for hundreds of years after his death. Augustine’s views regarding women are particularly relevant to the fight for feminism and equality in the U.S. today. This research will address the basic teachings of Augustine regarding women as communicated in his own writings as well as in scholarly literature. These teachings will then be related to one of the most controversial and current women’s issues; the defunding of Planned Parenthood. Through interviews with individuals on both sides of the debate—including self-proclaimed feminists and followers of the Catholic Church—this project will investigate participants’ familiarity with Augustine’s teachings, with the intention of understanding what influences the development of individuals’ views on women and reproductive rights.
