N2 - IN THIS ISSUE, we are privileged to feature the work of Robert Davidson, one of the most important living Canadian artists. A Member of the Order of Canada and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, he has received six honorary degrees from universities in Canada and the United States. Born in Hydaburg, Alaska, in 1946, his family moved to Old Massett, Haida Gwaii (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) the following year. His Haida name is guud san glans, which translates as Eagle of the Dawn. He is the great-grandson of Charles Edenshaw (1839–1920), an important Haida artist who worked with anthropologists Franz Boas and John Reed Swanton. Robert's grandmother, Florence Davidson, was also a respected Haida artist and Elder.
