Ethics and AI: Making the Discussion Visible

Research output: Contribution to conferencePresentation

Abstract

This presentation reveals how librarians can transform invisible ethical concerns about AI into visible classroom discussions. Last May, two librarians invited three first-year writing instructors to lunch to discuss AI and collaboration. The instructors suggested that library instruction should focus more on the ethics of generative AI instead of teaching students how to use it. They wanted library instruction to foster discussions about the ethical implications of using AI in the classroom and to encourage critical thinking about its use.

First-year students were posed a scenario where an AI system is used to write a persuasive speech on a critical social issue. Students were asked to list one potential risk or benefit in terms of accuracy or authority. Students added their response to a Padlet board which became a springboard for further discussion. The Padlet board transforms private thoughts into visible discussions, allowing previously unspoken concerns about AI ethics to surface in a safe environment.
