Abstract

A profound thank you to all of you who are reading this address in the Journal of the American Academy of Religion (JAAR). As a past editor of the JAAR, I know how difficult it is to edit our journal, and so thank you to Prof. Andrea Jain and her team for all of their hard labor. I especially want to thank them for allowing this published address to retain elements of how it was originally given, both as an oral presentation and with accompanying visuals. If you were there in San Antonio where I originally delivered the address, you saw me wearing a fabulous jacket (Figures 1 and 2) that was made for me by Jerry Lee Atwood, the creative force behind Union Western clothing.
