Progress – A Philosophical Analysis

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingEntry for encyclopedia/dictionary

Abstract

Does evolution manifest progress? Biologists have answered this question in various ways, but as yet no consensus has emerged. A persistent stumbling block to reaching agreement has been vagueness and imprecision with regard to the idea of progress. Progress requires both direction and improvement, but these concepts are also problematic, and require careful philosophical analysis.
