Abstract
Traditional models of sacrifice in Western, Confucian, and dharmic religious and ethical thought served to redirect actual violence to something more positive, but post- modern consumer-oriented society has lost the sense that sacrifice can lead to greater good; the violence of selfish greed drives human action. By regaining a sense of sacrifice and consequently conscience, the greater good of environmental and cultural sustainability may be achieved.
