Abstract

In Silekan, you work for the right to live. Thanks to Mezan, the biotechnology company controlling the city, this life of endless labor and exploitation is all seventeen-year-old Rena Stratanova has ever known, and she’ll trade away her time, her energy, her autonomy if it means her sickly mother, Maggie, and her younger sister, Sylvie, can survive. But when Sylvie is injured in an explosion, suffocating the family with medical debt and all but destroying her future income potential, Rena desperately searches for another way to take care of her family — and finds it in their mysterious neighbor, Jack.
